Dhaka, September 26, 2026: Students in Bangladesh are set to receive a week-long break during this year's Durga Puja celebrations.
Educational institutions will remain closed for five days, from October 18 to October 22, in observance of Durga Puja. Since October 23 and 24 fall on the regular weekly holidays, students will effectively receive seven consecutive days off, from October 18 through October 24.
The same five-day holiday schedule has also been included in the calendar for government primary schools. Primary students will therefore also enjoy the extended seven-day break when the weekly holidays are included.
Government Employees
Government employees will have official holidays on October 20 for Maha Navami and October 21 for Vijaya Dashami.
Hindu government employees can also take optional holidays on October 18 and 19 for Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami. Those who use the optional holidays and take October 22 as a holiday can connect them with the October 23–24 weekend, creating a longer break.
However, the optional-holiday arrangement is applicable only to Hindu government employees. Other government workers will receive the holidays specifically included in the official government calendar.
Banks and Essential Services
Banks and financial institutions generally remain closed during government holidays, although selected branches or services may operate when required under Bangladesh Bank instructions.
Digital services such as ATMs, cards and online banking are generally expected to remain available.
Essential services—including hospitals, police, fire services, electricity, gas and water supply—will continue according to operational requirements.
Private companies and organizations may follow separate holiday schedules based on their own policies.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division recently revised the holiday calendar for educational institutions. Although the date of another holiday was changed in the revised schedule, the Durga Puja holiday dates remained unchanged.
